Decorating a kid’s new room

Author: Moving Mom  //  Category: Decorating, Kids, Uncategorized

Sometimes the best thing a move has going for it in a kid’s eyes is the chance to have a cool new room. Themed rooms are fun, whether you pick one or two favorite colors and mix them with white or black for a high contrast look, or if you go for a character, or a favorite theme like castles, sports, dinosaurs or space. We’ve had all kinds of cool rooms. Here are some ideas to spur creativity and give your little one something to look forward to:

Dinosaur theme

For a dinosaur themed room, we relied on lime green accents from Ikea like a giant leaf, fuzzy pillow covers and cute dinosaur fabric covered bulletin boards I found at a local discount store. Pulling it together with dinosaur bedding from Overstock.com, and framed outdoor family portraits of dinosaurs from our vast plastic and foam dinosaur collection, we had an incredible room for two for less than $200.

Space theme

Another favorite was a space room. This was as simple as buying adhesive glow in the dark stars and a planet mobile. You can also find space quilted bedding at Overstock.com or find Star Wars themed bedding at any big box retailer. If Star Wars is the passion of your little one (mine too!) you can’t go wrong with a life size wall decoration from Fatheads.

Sports themes

These are a little easier to shop for - in fact, if you have a sports fan, you probably have what it takes lying around already. Mount a hockey stick or baseball bat to the wall. Make a collection of balls or jerseys stand out by encasing them professionally. Take old t-shirts or jerseys and sew them into a pillow by stuffing them with a pillow form and sewing or adding velcro strips at the openings. They also have Fatheads for most professional sports teams and popular athletes.

Whatever the theme, have fun with it! Make it something special that you and your child can look forward to and do together in your new home. And of course, plan for inviting new friends over for a sleep over to test out the wow factor!
